1961 Junior Final  

Kingscourt Stars in 1961 Junior Final on Sunday (Courtesy of the Anglo Celt Files) Kingscourt Stars junior football team have reached the final of the Cavan championship in which they meet famous Mullahoran in Breffni Park on Sunday. The Kingscourt side last won the title in 1954 when they beat Cavan Harps in the decider and of that team only one, Victor Sherlock will line out on Sunday. This veteran player has been the inspiration of his side and has been mainly responsible for bringing them to the final.

Most of the present team have risen from the ranks of the juvenile team which won the Cavan championship in 1954 and the minor championship in 1956. Two of the team which won the under-16 competition in 1960 are also included.

 

 

John Gilmore (24) In Goals Better known as a handballer, he is the holder of many Ulster medals for Softball and Hardball. Good safe catch and is very cool under pressure.

Denis Farrelly (21) Right full- back Good fielder, good tackler, he will not give away any soft scores. Juvenile Minor Championship medals.

P.J. Gorman (22) Centre full-back Has all the qualities for this responsible position he so capably fills. Is the opinion of many that he is the best in the County in this position at present.

Pat Woolley (20) Left half-back A very staunch defender who plays his man and gives him little scope to score. Minor and Juvenile medal holder.

J. Carolan (21) Right half-back Plays his position well, good safe catch with a long clearance, always at hand to help a team-mate in trouble.

Paddy Russell (20) Centre half-back (Captain) Great fielder who is seldom beaten in the air, is playing great football this year and cannot be overlooked by the Cavan selectors. Minor Juvenile medal holder.

B. McBreen (17) Left half-back Always plays a sound game and can open up an attack from his position, good fielder and good on ground balls.

A. Daly (19) Centre-field Good strong player with good hands and can place the ball in the right place for his forwards. Minor, Juvenile medal holder.

E. Curran (27) Centre-field Has played with Louth and Monaghan clubs when domiciled there. He is always trying hard, good safe catch, can always find a loose team-mate to pass the ball to.

Brian Kennedy (17) Right Three-quarter A very fast player with great ball control. His solo runs are a feature of any game, a young player with a bright football future. Juvenile medal holder.

Matt Kennedy (20) 40-yard A powerful fit player with plenty of weight and speed, brother of Brian, he has a good catch and can score from far out. Minor medal holder.

Pat Tinnelly (16) The baby of the team not yet sixteen, he has a good safe catch and can always get a score. Juvenile medal holder.

V. Martin (19) Right full-forward A player who is always on the spot to finish off a score, he has good safe hands, good ball control and a great opportunist.

V. Sherlock (37) Full forward Still playing with his club, Victor is the main power in the forward line. Ulster, Leinster Championship medal holder, two All-Irelands with Cavan, Ulster Railway Cup teams for five years, also honoured on the Ireland representatives team, his name is a household word when great footballers are discussed. Has many Ulster handball championship medals and one Junior All-Ireland singles.

Brian Smith (20) Left full-forward A very smart player, he is always on the move and when in possession is a great menace to the opposition. Has Juvenile and Minor medals.

T. McCabe (19) Replaced P. Tinnelly in semi-final and played a great game, very brainy player with a good catch and a great body swerve. Juvenile medal holder.

B. Moore (20) Has played in nearly every position on the team, good strong player with a good catch and kick. Minor and Juvenile medal holder. Many Ulster handball medals.
